CDL Truck Driving

There is currently a great urgency for over-the-road truck drivers, as products and goods increase, the need to ship articles of commerce are just urgent.

There are three types of trucking according to Online Truck Driving Jobs

Local: This type of driving job refers to loading and unloading in local areas, such as the town you live in and surrounding areas. The pay for local driving is hourly and drivers are home every evening. A local driver may be expected to drive 8 to 10 hours a day. One examples of local driving would be a tanker service who delivers fuel to local gasoline stations.

Over-The-Road: This type of driving job entails delivering freight in all 48 states and Canada, or may only include some states. How far a driver travels is up to the trucking company who employs the driver. The pay is normally calculated by mile with an expected schedule of 2,500 miles per week. OTR drivers are limited to driving 70 hours within 8 days. They are expected to take an 8 hour break after 10 hours of driving. A driver can make more money if they are not required to load and unload their truck. These drivers are away from home an average of 1 to 4 weeks at a time.

Short Haul: This type of driver is engaged in driving 100 miles or less from their home base. Short haul drivers usually make multiple deliveries in one trip and sometimes load and unload the vehicles, carry packages or perform other duties beyond driving the truck. A short haul driver works for companies such as: UPS and FedEx.

There are some definite qualifications for driving a truck, whether a person chooses, over-the-road, short haul or local driving: Different companies have their own policies and though some qualifications vary, here are some general requirements every truck driver needs to know.

Age: There is a minimum age requirement of 21 years, for out of state driving.

CDL License Class A: This can be obtained by a truck driving school, along with endorsement for specialized training, such as driving a tanker truck.

Department of Transportation Physical Exam: Drivers must pass a standard D.O.T physical exam along with a drug screen (illegal drug use is an immediate disqualification for a CDL license). A bad medical history or back injury may interfere with a person’s ability to gain employment as a truck driver.

Driving Record: A good driving history within the last three years a standard qualification for most companies, however, some may be stricter and some may tend to be more lenient.

Criminal Record: Drug or theft histories will disqualify a driver. OTR companies do not hire drivers who have a felony conviction, so felony records must be at least 10 years old, in order to qualify for a position as a driver.

Work History: If a potential driver shows on his application that he has been “job hopping” it may disqualify him for an OTR position, unless there is a good explanation. Many truck driving companies look for drivers who have been at previous positions for long periods of time because it reveals a good work ethic. A driver needs to have a good work history for a period of at least three years.
